Do you need a Union?
Thinking about it?

The Manitoba Labour Relations Act gives you the full power of Manitoba's legal system when you decide to join a union.Section 5 of the act gives each person the right to join a union and participate in organizing a union. It's your right.
Management can't find outUnder the law (Section 45.6), no one from management is ever allowed to know whether you signed up.
You're protected from harassmentSections 7, 9 and 10 protect you from being fired, demoted or harassed if you decide to join. Management can't even threaten to do so. It's the law.
Your rights are enforcedThe Manitoba Labour Relations Board enforces your rights. It has the power to order changes to your workplace, reinstate employees or award promotions and back-pay. Employers can be jailed or fined by the courts if they don't comply.
This is the lawYou have the right to join in confidence and are protected. Click here for questions and answers on joining a union. CUPE doesn't represent every sector of the economy. We have expertise in the public sector -- we concentrate on it. That's why we do such a good job.

Public workplaces are different. They focus on providing a valuable service our neighbours depend on. And with CUPE's experience in the public sector, we have the knowledge to give front-line workers a say in how those services are provided.

Our concentration in the public sector gives us expertise in these areas. And our size lets us lobby government employers to ensure public services remain strong.

It's a fact a union contract is the best on-the-job protection there is. It offers such good protection because a strong union such as CUPE backs up its members in so many ways. And unionized workers have higher wages and better benefits -- that's why so many people don't go to work without a CUPE contract.

A union contract protects you from being fired without just cause, and a full hearing of your case. It gives you a grievance and arbitration system to cover anything in your contract. And promotions under most union contracts are based on experience, not favouritism.

A CUPE contract is backed up by an all-Canadian, professional union. The largest union in the country, in fact. Our trained experts can match the best management has to offer in negotiating, in areas such as research, education, communications, legal, job evaluation, health and safety and equal opportunities. And each CUPE local is serviced by a full-time, professional staff representative.

We're a big union. And we're a good union that delivers for its members.
But as big as we are, we've got room for you.

We're the Canadian Union of Public Employees -- the union that saves jobs and stands up for public service standards. We're the union that improves wages and working conditions.
That's why we're Canada's biggest, representing over 500,000 workers across Canada.
500,000 people. That's strength in numbers.

Our union's strength comes not only from the number of members we have, but also because our 2,500 locals are completely autonomous. At CUPE, you're in charge. You decide how we operate, you decide the level of your dues and you decide what the priorities are for your workplace.

When you have locals ranging in size from one to thousands, you learn pretty quickly that each workplace is unique.
We're a unique union, right for your unique workplace. So look at CUPE. We think you'll like what you see. And joining CUPE is as easy as 1, 2, 3.
1. Sign your membership card.
2. Once more than 40% of your co-workers sign, hold a vote for the union of your choice. Or, if a large majority - 65% or more - sign a card, you're automatically certified.
3. Form a CUPE local and you're in charge.
