Citizens Coalition Launched with Overflow Excitement
WINNIPEG: Almost 200 people took part in launching the Winnipeg Citizens Coalition (WCC) last night, and thus starting a formal challenge to the policies and practices of the Mayor and City Council. A diverse crowd representing Winnipeg’s citizenry included a few City Councillors, business, labour, education, environmental groups, social service agencies, community centres, youth organizations and First Nations groups. “The WCC’s goal is to offer an alternative vision for the city,” says Coalition Co-Chair Cindy Gilroy-Price. “People want to get behind something they can support and help change in their community.” “We think that municipally, a centre-left coalition can be more influential if we work together on common issues, “said Co-chair Liam Martin. “The energy in the room last night was exciting, and we expect to build on this momentum over the coming months. We want to provide a voice for those who are promoting a more inclusive vision of a better Winnipeg.” Over the summer and into the fall a number of sub-committees will start to work on research, communication and action the WCC will take on.
